Adult Tracheostomy Cannula

Code CTA9

The Adult Tracheostomy Cannula —also known as an adult tracheal cannula— provides a secondary airway through the tracheostoma. The CTA9 cannulas are manufactured in variable lengths to suit different situations that may require longer or shorter device paths.

Made of biocompatible Stening® silicone, it is flexible and easy to place and handle. The longer versions help maintain ventilation even in the presence of low or precarinal tracheal lesions that may lie beyond the reach of other devices.

Clinical indications

The Adult Tracheostomy Cannula is indicated to provide and maintain a secondary airway through the tracheostoma.

  • As a stent, in distant, precarinal, stenotic, inflammatory tracheal lesions or of other etiologies that result in a partial occlusion hindering the patient’s ventilation.
  • Secondary access to the airway.
  • Upper airway obstruction.
  • Severe lesions of the thyroid or cricoid cartilages, hyoid bone or great vessels.
  • Severe subcutaneous emphysema of the neck.
  • Facial and mandible fractures.
  • Control of excessive secretions of the respiratory tract.
  • Prevention of aspiration of oral and gastric secretions.
  • Preparation for invasive head and neck procedures.
  • Severe sleep apnea not amenable to CPAP or others.
  • All those of tracheostomies.

Available dimensions

The Adult Tracheostomy Cannula is offered in six sizes (CTA9-60 to CTA9-110), with the same internal and external diameter and increasing lengths from 60 to 110 millimeters.

Measurements expressed in millimeters. Stening® CTA9 cannulas 100 and 110 mm in length have been used successfully to maintain ventilation in tracheostomized patients with severe low or precarinal subobstructive tracheal lesions that may lie beyond the reach of other endotracheal devices. Placement

The cannulas are introduced directly through the tracheostomy opening.

  1. When a cannula is replaced, the skin must be cleansed with an antiseptic solution.
  2. A gel lubricant may optionally be used to ease the insertion maneuver.
  3. The cannula flange is secured by encircling the neck with the tape provided. Do not apply excessive tension when tying the tape.
  4. Ask the assistant to slip a little finger under the tape before tightening it. This achieves an appropriate tension for comfortable use.
  5. Place a gauze between the flange and the skin of the neck.

Postoperative care

Recommendations for the postoperative care of the patient with a tracheostomy cannula.

  • Change the gauze placed between the cannula flange and the skin at least once a day.
  • Cleanse the skin with an antiseptic solution.
  • In case of an unwanted increase in bronchial secretions or their viscosity, drink plenty of fluids, perform frequent nebulizations and use a suction system to remove secretions through the cannula.
  • Consult your physician.
