The Pediatric Tracheostomy Cannula —also known as a pediatric tracheal cannula— is a flexible small-caliber silicone cannula with an external extension and adapter, for a connection intended for an oxygen-enriched, humidified air supply, or both.

The cannula extension reduces the transfer of movements from the connection that supplies supplemental oxygen or the nebulizer. Made of biocompatible Stening® silicone.

Clinical indications

The Pediatric Tracheostomy Cannula is indicated to maintain a secondary airway in tracheostomized pediatric patients.

  • All those of tracheostomies in pediatric patients.
  • Tracheostomy with connection to a humidified oxygen supply.

Available dimensions

The Pediatric Tracheostomy Cannula is offered in two sizes (HB4 and HB5), sized for the small calibers of the pediatric airway.

Placement

The cannula is introduced through the tracheostomy opening, keeping the neck in a hyperextended position.

  1. Keep the neck in a hyperextended position.
  2. Use a viscous lubricant.
  3. Insert through the tracheostomy opening.
  4. Secure to the neck with non-adhesive tape, keeping enough tension for a little finger to pass between the tape and the neck.

Postoperative care

Recommendations for the postoperative care of the pediatric patient with a tracheostomy cannula.

  • Replace the gauze that separates it from the skin of the neck at least once a day.
  • In case of noisy breathing, cleanse by instilling sterile saline solution and gently aspirate with a thin catheter no longer than the length of the cannula.
  • Consult your physician immediately.

Warnings for use

Important

It does not have an inflatable balloon to close a mechanical ventilation circuit.

The device must not be reused, as this could cause cross-contamination.
