Tracheostomy Tutor

Code TU

The Tracheostomy Tutor —also known as a stoma stent or tracheostoma maintainer— allows a secondary access to the airway. It replaces the conventional tracheal cannula, providing comfort, reduced secretion production and facilitating phonation. It keeps the tracheostomy opening patent until its definitive closure is decided.

The Tutor is fixed in the stoma of the anterior tracheal wall and in the planes of the neck; its introduction into the tracheal lumen is minimal. The ring of the external limb keeps it in the desired position. Its external limb must be permanently occluded, so that the entry of warm, moist air through the upper airway is possible. Made of biocompatible Stening® silicone.

Product information

Review the indications, dimensions, how to use, care and warnings of the Tracheostomy Tutor.

Clinical indications

The Tracheostomy Tutor is indicated to preserve the tracheostomy opening once the cannula or T-tube has been removed.

  • After removing a cannula or a “T” tube, to prevent the definitive closure of the stoma.
  • To preserve the tracheostomy opening.

Available dimensions

The Tracheostomy Tutor is offered in two sizes (TU8 and TU11). The number indicates the external diameter in millimeters.

Placement

The stoma tutor is introduced through the already formed tracheal opening.

  1. Beforehand, the surrounding skin must be cleansed and an antiseptic solution applied. Since the tutor is small, the use of a lubricant is optional.
  2. The tutor is introduced through the stoma by holding it between the thumb and index finger or with the help of a curved forceps.
  3. Once in position, and just as is done after placing the T-tube model, the ring that holds the cap is applied, separated from the skin by a small gauze.
  4. To remove the tutor, it is only necessary to pull on its external limb.

Postoperative care

The tutor design simplifies care compared with a conventional cannula.

The portion of the tutor that lodges inside the trachea consists of two small flanges that hinder accidental extraction. Therefore, there is no part of the device inside the trachea as occurs with a conventional cannula, so suction of the inside of the tutor is unnecessary. Likewise, it has a cap on its external limb that makes it possible to aspirate tracheal secretions in cases where, due to their abundance, this is useful.
