Pharyngeal Tube

The Pharyngeal Tube —also called pharyngeal prosthesis or oropharyngeal tube— is made of flexible silicone and is useful in a variety of situations. Its apical end widens progressively: thus the anterior edge keeps contact with the base of the tongue, while the posterior edge rests on the pharyngeal wall.

In this way it collects saliva in the oropharynx and channels it to the esophagus, preventing tissue maceration and avoiding the aspiration of saliva into the airway. A nasoenteral feeding tube can be introduced through the Pharyngeal Tube.

Clinical indications

The Pharyngeal Tube is useful in a variety of situations that require channeling saliva to the esophagus and protecting the airway.

  • Fistulas secondary to laryngectomy, radiotherapy, neoplastic conditions and caustic ingestion

The Pharyngeal Tube is offered in a standard size (TF12) and can be cut to the length deemed appropriate for each case.

Insertion technique

The insertion of the Pharyngeal Tube must be performed under general anesthesia. It can be cut to the length deemed appropriate for the case.

A laryngoscope will be used to gain comfortable access to the larynx and adequate vision. With the help of a hypopharyngoscope and long forceps, grasp the tube by its distal end to guide it toward the esophagus, until the proximal cup is at the laryngeal level. Prior esophageal dilation may be necessary. After its insertion it can be fixed with a percutaneous suture.
